This child observation will draw on a child developmental theory to discuss the activities of the child I have observed. I will comment on the child’s physical growth and development, cognitive abilities, health, social relationships and emotional wellbeing. I will also look at the child’s interaction with other children and adults , in order to appreciate the child’s development and account for differences and similarities as proffered by my chosen theory of Attachment. I intend to demonstrate the relevance of attachment theory to the child I observed and to provide a critique for the whole observation. Aspects of anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practices will also be examined together with relevant legislations. Bowlby (1962/1969) asserts that the infant relationship with the parent or care giver begins as a set of innate signals that call the adult to the baby’s side. With time, a true affectionate bond develops, supported by new emotional and cognitive capacities as well as by a history of warm, sensitive care (Berk 2009). The key insight in interpreting the attachment behaviours that Bowlby described is to see the attached infant or child as using their caregiver as a secure base from which to explore. In the three stories read in class many of the family members are emotionally detached from each other. Emotional detachment is when a person avoids making connections with those in his/her personal and social round. The members in Louisa, Walter and Paul’s families show emotional detachment towards Louisa, Walter and Paul because their family members do not understand them nor do they want to. Louisa’s mother, from Shirley Jackson’s short story, â€Å"Louisa Please Come Home,† is emotionally detached from Louisa because she does not share a mother-daughter connection with her.
